This November we’ve played a leading role in the conversations of the online academy #WineStudio, led by Lyn Farmer (@fizzfan), wine expert and famed writer. Over four weeks, Lyn and his followers have been able to discuss opinions about how we work in the vineyards, our commitment to sustainability and continued innovation – and, what better way to get to know us than tasting our wines?
History and topography
During the first week, Lyn showed how our history and our location define the way that our wines should be understood. Innovation and the use of oak, with the use of hybrid barrels (American oak staves and French oak bottoms), are key to the identity of LAN Crianza 2016 and LAN Reserva 2012, examples of ageing in hybrid barrels.
In the second session, conversation arose around the use of oak in the winemaking process, with the separate use of French and American oak. Our barrel cellar, with its characteristic pyramid-shaped piles of barrels, astounded the participants, who tasted LAN Gran Reserva 2011 and LAN D-12 2016.
Viña Lanciano: the balance between the vineyard and the oak
During the third week, Lyn talked about our vineyard and its peculiarities in greater depth. He also highlighted the fact that our winemaker, María Barúa, is constantly experimenting with the use of different types of oak: Russian, Hungarian, Spanish… and what each type brings to our estate wines. And as an example of the vineyard they could try Viña Lanciano 2012, and LAN Edición Limitada 2016, a great example of innovation.
Sustainability and technology
The fourth and final session sparked chats about the use of technology to make our vineyards more sustainable; and organic vine growing, with the last wine to be added to the LAN family, LAN Xtrème Ecológico Crianza 2015. And to finish, the tailored ageing used in each of our wines was something that really surprised the US audience, eager for more information about our winery.
Participating in this online training programme was very valuable to us. We were able to share our tastes and experiences of wine with many experts, who had the chance to taste some of our wines with the most unusal pairings: lobster burger, spicy chicken soup, gyozas, lasagna, salads and, of course, the classic beef, and roast pork ribs.
